A recent visit to the magnificent estate that has been transformed by Laurence Graff, yielded not only views, magnificent architecture and interiors, but a meeting with a very special, talented winemaker by the name of Morne Vrey. This, his flagship red, is a multilayered blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 9% Shiraz, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec.. Morne took care to only destem the bunches ( not crush ) to ensure gentle extraction of fruit flavours with not too much tannin. After gently basket-pressing the wine, it went into French oak barriques, where it matured for twelve months. It is powerful, yet elegant and polished – a great Bordeaux-style blend with classical aromas of dark berry fruit ( cassis ) and spice. The all-round balance and depth of flavour make it an excellent example of its type, and it is ready now, but will improve until 2017.
