Nikela is a Cape Blend of Pinotage (37%), Cabernet Sauvignon (34%), Shiraz (20%) and Merlot (9%). The name Nikela is a Nguni word meaning “ to offer a gift of dedication, respect or a tribute to one’s ancestors” – this wine being a tribute to winemaker Jeremy Walker’s late parents, who contributed greatly to the establishment of Grangehurst. The various component wines were matured separately in 225 litre barrels (90% French and 10% American) for 28 months. It has a dark mulberry colour, with a thin line of garnet on the rim. Intense nose of black and red macerated fruits with hints of graphite, mocha and mint. On palate it is nice and developed, at eight years of age, yet it is a mouthful of vibrant fruit and has smooth, ripe tannins but superb structure and firmness. Perfect now, but will drink well until al least 2015.
