The Quercia al Poggio Estate, dating back to the 1400’s, is located on a peninsula like piece of land that rises up from the Monsanto valley and overlooks an impressive roll of hills and valley. It is an incredible island of land with a well ventilated position. Its 15 hectares of vineyards lie at an altitude of 400m and are located in the coveted zone between the highly respected estates of Isole e Olena and Monsanto. The stony-calcareous soil is rich in fossils and mineral which gives the wines a good structure. The estate is surround by 100 hectares of parkland through which run well kept lanes where one can jog, horseback ride, bicycle, stroll or just sit and drink their Chianti which to my mind is definitely the most pleasurable. The regular Chianti is 90% Sangiovese with 10% of Cigliegiolo and 5% mixed Malvasia Nera and Cannaiolo that under the expert hand of Maurizio Castelli and a 12 month stay in French barriques develops great harmony and structure. The bouquet is filled with red berries, in particular red currents and dark cherries, mixed with vanillla and subtle spices. The finish is exceptionally elegant and long.
