Tasting notes
Its nose is complex with aromas of black cherries, perfume, pepper and liquorice. On the palate, it starts with flavours of dark berry fruit and lavender, while the finish is dry and reminiscent of currant and savoury notes. Tannins are forthcoming but well incorporated and ripe. This wine is quite shy while young and will continue to develop and become more expressive over the next 8 years from vintage and beyond.
‘Always more than the sum of its impressive parts, Kalmoesfontein is Syrah-based with 60% Cinsault, Tinta Barocca and Touriga Nacional, all picked on the same day and co-fermented. Concentrated, but not over-extracted, with stony reduction, some oak spices, garrigue top notes and layers of plum, blackberry and fennel. 2024-32’ – Tim Atkin, MW, South African Special Report 2022, 94/100
‘Consisting primarily of Syrah, Cinsault and Grenache but also multiple other varieties, these co-fermented. The nose is quite heady with notes of red and black berries, lavender, fennel and fynbos while has plenty of ripe fruit and fine tannins – full of flavour with an nicely savoury finish.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100
Food Pairing
The warm earthy notes of the wine will suite a tomato-based casserole beautifully, or a rich cheese fondue!
