Tasting notes

‘45% Chenin Blanc, 11% Clairette Blanche, 10% Grenache Blanc, 8% Palomino, 8% Roussanne, 8% Viognier, 5% Muscat d’Alexandrie and 5% Verdelho – all grapes picked over three days. Gorgeous aromatics of fllowers, fynobs, pear, peach, citrus and quince. The palate is intense but not weighty with a striking line of acidity and a pithy finish. Poised and detailed. Alc: 13.5%.’ – CE 96pts

‘The 2022 White Blend Kalmoesfontein, fermented in foudres and aged in concrete for 20 months, has a tightly wound bouquet that demands coaxing: melted candle wax, white flowers and a very slight Muscat note from the 1-2% of that variety in the blend. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, palpable energy and poise, closing with a refined, pithy, orange-rind-tinged finish. Excellent. 2025-2035.’ – Neal Martin, Vinous

AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. In 2007, Adi Badenhorst bought the run-down farm in the Paardeberg in partnership with his cousin Hein. The old cellar was radically restored and extended and the vineyards have been painstakingly rejuvenated.
The vineyards, mostly old bushvines, were planted in the 1950s and 1960s to Chenin Blanc, Cinsault  and Grenache. The vines are unirrigated and farmed as biologically as possible. The vineyards are planted on north, east, and south facing slopes bringing tremendous variety to the fruit. Fruit from other selected sites within the appellation are also purchased to complete the final blends. Three distinct types of granites are found here, namely the Paardeberg-, Lammershoek- and Lemoenfontein-type plus different sub-surface geology including clay, weathered granite and some serious shale.
On Kalmoesfontein it’s back to basics, using traditional winemaking equipment and old cement kuipe, taking inspiration from great old wines of South Africa and the discarded varietals, the bottles of which can be found in the forgotten corners of old cellars.
