Tasting notes

Delightful interplay of blackcurrant, cassis, violet perfume and an earthy richness. The wine feels silky, supple and smooth when first it hits the palate. Flavours of dark berry fruit, Christmas pudding, cigar box and spice then make their presence felt. Beautifully poised and balanced with neither fruit nor oak dominating. Good backbone and lithe body. The oak is sympathetic and supportive. A delightful blend with an aftertaste which goes on and on, making it ideal for food. Can be laid down until 2025+

Serve with your best cut of prime rib of beef, medium-rare and your favourite wine friend.

International businessman Johann Rupert’s model winemaking enterprise, named for his late brother, Anthonij, has 18th century L’Ormarins Estate, situated beneath the jagged peaks of the Groot Drakenstein mountains in the Franschhoek valley as its home. Anthonij Rupert Wyne focus on terroir specific wines made from a number of sites for optimal varietal specific growing conditions. Grapes are sourced from own prime vineyards in Darling, Swartland, Elandskloof and the home farm, as well as exceptional vineyard sites, including old-vine parcels around the winelands. Vinification is by specialist winemakers in four custom cellars. The venture encompasses an internationally successful quintet of brands, namely: Anthonij Rupert, Cape of Good Hope, L’Ormarins, Terra del Capo and Jean Roi.

The grapes selected for the Anthonij Rupert Optima, come from their L’Ormarins Estate in Franschhoek and Rooderust farm in Darling.  Specific sites, each with their own unique soil type and climatic conditions, were identified for the ideal grape selection, which make up unique components of the final blend in Optima. A superb blend of 37% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc.
