Ataraxia was founded in 2004. Husband and wife team, Kevin and Hanli Grant, in partnership with a few friends, purchased 47 hectares of prime vineyard land west of Cape Agulhas, South Africa’s southernmost tip, and just a short distance from the coastal town of Hermanus.
The landscape upon which the Skyfields farm is situated is unique, lying as it does on the most elevated section of the Hemel-en-Aarde area (Afrikaans for Heaven-and-Earth). The vineyards are planted on predominantly south-facing Sandstone, Cape Granite and Bokkeveld Shale which are among the most ancient soils on earth. These dictated which grape cultivars were planted almost two decades ago. The climate is particularly mild and ideal for growing cooler-climate-loving grapes. It is a place where wines of finesse, balance and depth – which give a pure expression of the terroir – are crafted.
Ataraxia is Greek for ‘a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation’.
Painstaking fruit selection and skilled wine making using reductive cellar techniques has resulted in Kevin Grant’s Sauvignon Blanc seamlessly incorporating the very best that the Old and New World styles have to offer.
