Region: Barolo ( Baudana )
SE exposure, steep vineyard of 35yo vines on calcareous soil, giving super minerality. On palate, slightly lighter and drier than Ceretta, though broad, heady and complex with a decided chalkiness adding a chiselling effect to the mouthfeel. Very terroir-specific – great stuff for the collector. ( CR 18.5 )
Serra is very different to Cerretta in that it lies higher up the ridge beyond the castello, on white talc-like soils, that face east/south east, ventilated day & night. So it captures the exciting morning sun that pours into the vertiginous slope at right angles, filling the fruit and wine with pacy red fruit and life. Pale red garnet, it’s decidedly cool-headed, with composed cranberry sea-salt poise. It’s packed with lots of little thick skin red fruit. More aloof and distant than the gregarious Cerretta, Serra is very refined, with taut red berried fruit – it represents the essence of Serralunga Baroli. There’s a rose transparency to the palate, along with plenty of energy andzip, while it seems that raspberry essence clings deliciously to the bracing acidity. Painfully good, one to tuck away for the years to come! ( DBG )
Came tops in a recent Decanter tasting line-up.
