Beau Constantia is a boutique wine farm situated at the top of Constantia Nek overlooking False Bay. Vines are planted to an elevation of 350 metres above sea-level on some of the steepest agricultural slopes in the Cape.
After devastating fires destroyed the fynbos and pine forests on the property in 2000, the slopes were cleared and terraced, thereby exposing great potential for the planting of vineyards. Pierre and Cecily Du Preez purchased the twenty-two hectare property in 2002 and after extensive soil analysis the first vineyards were planted in 2003 with the help of dedicated farm manager, Japie Bronn. Their Family Range of Wines get their namesakes from the owners of the estate and each fruit is meticulously hand raised from farm to bottle.
The 2020 STELLA – 99,5% Syrah. A splash of Viognier – is made with the absolute intention to preserve the site that grew the fruit. The bunches were hand-picked from a small parcel of the lower lying slopes where Syrah and Viognier grow side by side. Natural fermentation started four days after a cold-soak and grapes remained on their skins and stems for five days post fermentation. They were then pressed to 225L French oak barriques of which 28% were new and the remainder five to six years old.
