Within a mere thirty years Beyerskloof has become synonymous with South Africa’s heritage varietal, Pinotage. It all started with a vineyard, planted at a small home farm off the Koelenhof road in Stellenbosch, bought in 1988. A few years later in 1995, the first Beyerskloof Pinotage was produced. Beyerskloof now has three well established farms within the Stellenbosch Wine Valley. These farms provide access to a combination of premium and older vines.
Proprietor and cellar master, Beyers Truter, one of the Cape’s foremost winemakers is especially respected for his passion for, and expertise in the production of Pinotage. Every wine and vintage is driven by a yearning to satisfy the drinking experience and enjoyment of wine lovers at all levels. Today, winemaker Anri Truter continues to build on the legacy of his father.
Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage is a tribute to Beyers Truter’s beloved Great Dane, Diesel who features on the label. This remarkable Pinotage is a local hero drawing inspiration from their close relationship.
Grapes were picked at optimum ripeness. Once destemmed berries went through a sorting system to minimize greenness. Fermentation took place in open casks, with punch downs done every two hours for four to five days. Grapes were pressed before fermentation finished and malolactic fermentation took place in a stainless steel tank. The wine went into new French oak barrels for seventeen months after which only the best barrels were selected for this wine.
