Botanica Wines, located in Stellenbosch’s Devon Valley, was founded in 2009 by owner and self-taught winemaker, Ginny Povall. She flies somewhat under the radar but is best known for her multiple Platter’s 5-star winner, the Mary Delany Chenin Blanc.
The Big Flower range is crafted 100% from grapes grown at Protea Heights Farm, the home of Botanica, where the terroir is particularly well-suited to Bordeaux varietals. The vines for this wine grow in predominantly decomposed granite soil, with pockets of shale and sandstone, at an altitude of 200m above sea level. Vines were planted in 2009 and 2010.The floral labels pay tribute to their heritage as South Africa’s first commercial flower farm.
Botanica Big Flower Merlot 2021
Every bit as good as the 2020 release, Botanica’s Merlot is now established as one of the best expressions of the variety in South Africa. Matured in 33% new wood, it has dark chocolate and pencil shaving aromas, sculpted, fine-grained tannins and a core of blackcurrant leaf, plum and red berries. 2024-30’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 95/100
