Brookdale Estate, owned by UK businessman Tim Rudd, is situated in a tranquil valley under the Klein Drakenstein mountains. Brookdale extends over eighty hectares with twenty-seven planted to vine and the remainder left to revert to its natural habitat. When Tim first acquired the land of Brookdale, it was overgrown and underused. As Tim and the team began to clear the land, replant indigenous trees and shrubs, and plant new vines, they happened across something remarkable… A single block of Chenin Blanc had been quietly thriving on one of the slopes at Brookdale Estate and held immense potential. The block was to yield the first vintage of Brookdale Chenin Blanc from the then thirty-five-year-old vines. With exquisite detail, nuanced balance and an impactful flavour profile, the Brookdale Chenin Blanc rivals the classic white wines of Burgundy.
Brookdale Chenin Blanc 2022
R413.00
Region: Paarl
Tasting note:
‘The 2022 vintage was very hot in Paarl, hitting 46° in February, but there’s no sign of that on this old-vine Chenin Blanc from a 1.8-hectare parcel planted in 1985. Rich, dry and well structured, it has subtle nutmeg, thatch and vanilla top notes, flavours of pear and yellow apple, scented 15% new wood and a mineral core. 2025-30’ – Tim Atkin MW
‘Subtly keyed; restrained aromatics of pear skin, honeycomb and golden citrus. Just a hint of pastry cream and toast. The palate is deep, dense and concentrated. Fleshy and generous, tempered by a stony acidity sewn through the layers and layers of flavour. Yellow apples, kumquat and peaches sing. The chalky texture is the background music, giving ballast to all those curves. The savoury finish calls in the wax of the nose, the echo of the radiant fruit.’ – Winemaker
