Region: Montalcino, Tuscany
Donatella Cinelli Colombini is something of a vineyard revolutionary, having opened Italy’s first winery run solely by women. Her ancestors first owned land in the Montalcino area in the 16th century, and recent generations have passed property down the female line. When Cinelli Colombini inherited the estate from her mother in the late 1990s, she went in search of staff at Siena’s oenology school.
The property now has 16 hectares of Sangiovese vineyards, producing the area’s famous Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino wines. They adhere to the strict controls which afford them the quality DOC and DOCG labels, while Cinelli Colombini’s estate is one of 210 producers in the Consortium of the Brunello of Montalcino.
The Casato Prime Donne Estate has been in Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s family since 1592, is 300m above sea level and is surrounded by 16 hectares of vineyards. The winery is a first of its kind in Italy in that it has an all woman staff.
This wine comes from two small Sangiovese vineyards which surround the Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino, Tuscany, which was built in the 16th century.
The wine, made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, is a dark, ruby-red colour with garnet edges. The nose is full and rich, yet fine with hints of spices and red fruits, including sweet cherries and raspberries. The palate is intense and full with a warm, lingering finish. A wine of complexity and elegance, showing the feminine character of the maker. Like any other Brunello di Montalcino, it needs to rest and age in vats/barrique for 24 months and only be released on the 5th calendar year after vintage. This wine is one for the cellar – mature until 2021 but it will be better in 2025+.
“Aromas of forest floor, menthol, new leather and exotic spice take center stage on this fragrant red. Racy and linear, the lithe elegant palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, orange slice, licorice and crushed herb alongside polished tannins and vibrant acidity. Drink 2021–2026”. KERIN O’KEEFE
