The focus of this small newly planted Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley property owned by leading Franschhoek winery Boekenhoutskloof is on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Until the vines start bearing fruit, cellarmaster Gottfried Mocke sources grapes for the Cap Maritime label locally and from further afield for his Cape Winemakers Guild wine. Sustainability is key on the farm, with estate manager Petrus Bothma and consulting viticulturist Rosa Kruger taking care to limit environmental impact from the outset. Alien vegetation has been cleared, the original fynbos species reintroduced, and vineyard establishment done in contours rather than traditional blocks.
Cap Maritime Pinot Noir 2021
R533.00
Region: Hemel En Aarde
Tasting note:
‘”I went much lighter in 2021″ says Gottfried Mocke of his Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir, which saw 25% whole bunches and 60% blonde-toasted new barrels. Juicy, bright and perfumed, it’s a blend of the 115 and 777 clones, with raspberry fruit, a herbal twist and savoury tannins. 2023-27’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2022, 91/100
