As Stellenbosch revolutionaries, Mick and Jeanine Craven’s constant experimentation and their willingness to fight for great little parcels, have made them the poster couple for bringing whole-bunch, skin contact, early picking and all things geeky to Stellenbosch. These Young Gunners are the Stellenbosch champions of light, yet complex wines. Producing single-vineyard wines only, these two winemakers know their vineyards like the back of their hands. ‘Craven is one of the most interesting wine projects in South Africa. It’s part of the rediscovery of the best vineyard sites in Stellenbosch that’s currently underway, with a whole group of young guns looking to find the gems and make interesting wines from them,’ says Jamie Goode.
Craven Pinot Gris 2023
R270.00
Region: Stellenbosch
Tasting note:
“Harvest involved two picks, the earlier to help maintain freshness in a low-acid year and the second, some seven days later, to add more texture and depth. Seven days of skin contact before maturation in concrete tanks. Pale red with an orange tinge in colour. Compelling and rather exotic aromatics of rose, potpourri, cranberry, orange, herbs, spice and a touch of earth. Good fruit expression and moderate acidity, the tannins possessing a chalky quality. Textured and flavourful with good length. Alc: 12.01%.” – CE
