Previously the winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof, Jean Smit has partnered with Canadian-born David Curl, the former owner of Château Gaby in Bordeaux, and South African-born Genevieve Hamilton-Brown to create the Damascene label. Jean Smit is a rising star in SA winemaking and certainly a winemaker to watch. They seek out unique vineyards and sites across the Western Cape winelands and have created an exciting, pitch-perfect set of wines which are placed amongst the finest in SA.

‘80% of grapes from Polkadraai Hills, 20% from Bottelary. 75% whole-bunch fermentation. Evocative aromatics of red and black berries, coriander, fynbos, floral perfume and white pepper. Great fruit purity, vibrant acidity and powdery tannins. Pure, energetic and so very drinkable. Lovely composure – all of a piece. Alc: 13.08%.’ – CE 96pts
