Previously the winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof, Jean Smit has partnered with Canadian-born David Curl, the former owner of Château Gaby in Bordeaux, and South African-born Genevieve Hamilton-Brown to create the Damascene label. Jean Smit is a rising star in SA winemaking and certainly a winemaker to watch. They seek out unique vineyards and sites across the Western Cape winelands and have created an exciting, pitch-perfect set of wines which are placed amongst the finest in SA.
Damascene W.O Ceres Plateau Syrah 2022
R552.00
Region: Ceres Plateau
Tasting note:
‘This rare, high-altitude wine makes an impressive entrance, with savoury Hoisin sauce, raspberry, and red cherry elements on the nose. Its unique terroir is felt on the palate, as vibrant pomegranate and more red berries cut through deeper elements of blackberry and cherry candy. The fruit elements are corseted by a delicately-stitched tannic frame, segueing into a finish of gentle clove, star anise, and lingering pomegranate.’ – Winemaker
“60% whole-bunch fermented. Matured for 11 months in 1 000-litre vats. Red currant, raspberry and black cherry to go with orange, jasmine and white pepper. Light-bodied (alcohol is 13.16% with lemon-like acidity and a creamy texture. Super-elegant. Alc: 13.16%.” – CE
