Cultivar: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
This Helderberg winery was established in 1981 by the Swiss Saager family, and it is still in their hands. Winemaker Nico Grobler has been at the helm since 1997 and their wines are excellent.
This Cabernet ( 4.5 stars in Platter ) has a dark ruby red colour, a generous bouquet redolent with gorgeous bright red berry fruits and black plums. Oak maturation was done in 300L barriques, 40% of which were new, so it is well integrated and subtle. On flavour it is very refined with precise acidity and tannin, both of which render poise to the muscular fruit core. It’s like an Olympic sprinter in the starting blocks – it has great potential – it will surge forth and will finish strong and tight. What a buy! One of the best bargains on the market – a similar wine will cost four times more in Bordeaux.
Lay down in a cool 17degC cellar until 2020 – 2026.
