As one of South Africa’s leading ambassadors and one of the most recognizable faces in the world of sport it is befitting that Ernie chose Stellenbosch to produce his wines. In 1999 the concept of Ernie Els Wines was born and with the help of award-winning winemaker Louis Strydom they produced the maiden 2000 vintage of Ernie Els – a ‘classic’ Bordeaux blend.
Vines are planted on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, benefitting from high-potential soils and the ideal growing conditions for their favoured varieties. The slopes feature a granite mother material, high in clay content with mainly Tukulu and Oakleaf soil families. The climate is warm and Mediterranean, with around 650mm annual rainfall, and situated 140m – 270m above sea level.
Epitomizing the character and celebrated prestige of their namesake, their four collections – Signature, Major Series, Big Easy and Proprietor’s – deliver iconic wines of characteristic style, exclusivity and generosity. The intention from the outset was to focus on delivering a quality product that could hold its own in the company of the world’s finest wines.
