The Flagstone winemaking operation started in a run-down shell of an old depot in Cape Town harbour – it was South Africa’s first urban winery. In 2002 production outgrew the location and Flagstone moved to an old dynamite factory in Somerset West, where all Flagstone wines are now made. They have been sourcing grapes from five core vineyards since 2003. Viticultural strategies are specifically tailored to individual varieties and vineyard parameters. Every bottle of Flagstone wine is handcrafted, and so too is the label.
Writer’s Block Pinotage is crafted from a single vineyard block high in the Waaihoek Mountains, above the sweeping Breedekloof valley. This is the highest vineyard in the area, planted in ancient, decomposed granitic soil. The natural environment in which the vines grow and bear fruit play a huge role in the style and quality of the resultant wine.
