Fleur du Cap is one of SA’s venerable brands, owned by Distell. It dates back to the 1960’s and was always reliable and often over-delivered, in terms of the quality-price ratio. Here is one such wine, discovered upon a recent private tasting at the cellar.
It’s a classic Cabernet in all respects and at its peak, but don’t be in a hurry to drink it. Grapes were sourced from Stellenbosch and it spent twelve months maturing in new and old French and American oak. Medium depth of flavour, with blackcurrant, autumn leaf and leather aromas which carry through to the palate. Long dry finish.
Sip it on its own or serve with a platter of mild cheese and nuts, or with roast lamb.
