This signature blend is a fitting tribute to the late Dr Julius Laszlö, the innovative, visionary Cellarmaster at Die Bergkelder who catapulted South African winemaking into the international league in the 1980s. Crafted from the finest barrels of noble varieties Dr Laszlö helped to establish in the Cape winelands, this full-bodied blend epitomises the Fleur du Cap philosophy of meticulous selection and regional excellence. Allowing the unbridled expression of the grapes to dictate the style, this signature wine is shaped in perfect harmony with nature, resulting in a superb classic that abounds with fruit and flavour. Fleur du Cap Laszlo 2015 is a blend of 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot, 13% Malbec and 7% Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Stellenbosch Kloof, as does the Petit Verdot. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc come from Devonvale and the Malbec comes from a farm in Simondium / Paarl. Matured for 24 months in 1st and 2nd-fill French Oak barrels.
Deep, intense plum colour with a bright hue. The bouquet has rich complex layers of black cherries, cassis and fruitcake with subtle nuances of pencil shavings and mint chocolate. These opulent flavours come through on the palate and follow through to well-integrated tobacco flavours balanced with cedar spice that is enveloped in smooth, silky soft tannins. This gives the wine an ethereal velvet mouthfeel that lingers long on the finish. It has sufficient freshness and structure to ensure longevity until at least 2026.
