Gabriëlskloof is the realisation of a dream for South African Bernhard Heyns, who searched for several years to find the unique piece of land that, in his words, would “root him to the spot”. In 2001 he found what was then a canola farm named ‘Avontuur’ and the penny dropped. It was soon obvious that the site had the potential to make high-quality wines with a distinctive character, and so it has proved. Gabrielskloof has been owned and run by the Heyns family ever since. That family has since grown to include members of the local community, several of whom have risen through the ranks to senior positions at the farm.
Gabriëlskloof Elodie Chenin Blanc 2022
R630.00
Region: Swartland
Tasting note:
‘Elodie is a textbook Swartland Chenin Blanc that uses components from three vineyards on two different soil types. Naturally fermented in older barrels, it’s a textured, stony, intensely focused style with top notes of hay and fennel and a chiselled, pithy, stony palate. 2024-30’ – Tim Atkin MW 95/100
‘Tightly wound at first but unwinds into a full and layered expression of its mainly Swartland origins. Yellow kumquats, pear and straw accompany a fresh and zesty acidity and a mineral core. With time, the fruit grows in opulence in the glass, with almonds and buttered toast joining the bouquet and a light flinty smoke. Precise and age-worthy.’ – Winemaker
