Ghost Corner The Bowline Sauvignon-Semillon 2019

Ghost Corner wines are inspired by the treacherous coastal area around Cape Agulhas, at the southernmost tip of the Cape winelands known as ‘Spookdraai’ (Afrikaans for Ghost Corner). More than 130 ships were wrecked in these waters where where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet, and where compass readings show no deviation between magnetic and true north which made navigation just about impossible on dark and stormy nights. Local folklore claims that the ghosts of sailors who perished through the years can be seen wandering through the wild waters.

Just inland from this dramatic coastline, in the Elim ward, are the vineyards where David Nieuwoudt (of Cederberg Wines) makes the most of excellent growing conditions: deep lime-rich soil with plentiful slate and gravel deposits, cooling south-easterly breezes and average summer temperatures of 28 degrees centigrade.
Sailors call the bowline the ‘king of knots’- a strong simple knot that symbolises union, completion and eternal devotion. This white blend ‘ties the knot’ between Sauvignon blanc and Semillon.

Grapes for this Sauvignon Blanc were hand-harvested from 15-year-old Sauvignon Blanc vines and 14-year-old Semillon vines in south-facing vineyards.
