Glen Carlou was established in 1985 and since 2003 has been successfully owned and run by Hess Family Estates. To harness the farm’s vast winegrowing potential, the vines are meticulously selected in terms of rootstock and clone, while every variety is carefully chosen for its compatibility to the terror. Yields are kept rigorously low, ensuring that nature’s gifts are distilled in the flavorful grapes that they harvest. In the cellar, winemaker Arco Laarman and his team join forces with nature to create the Glen Carlou wines.
Glen Carlou Vineyards is minutes away from the university town of Stellenbosch and less than 35 minutes’ drive from Cape Town. Situated in the Simonsberg-Paarl region of South Africa’s Western Cape, our estate was transformed from being a dairy farm in 1985 to a wine farm.
Walter Finlayson acquired the property known as ‘Len Carlou’. He not only enhanced the name but with his affinity for Burgundian wines, the first vine plantings were those of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. After a 13-year period of ownership by the Swiss based Hess Group, Glen Carlou transferred back to local ownership in 2016 when a South African family consortium purchased the estate.
