Groote Post is a historic 18th century farm close to Darling on the Cape’s West Coast where winemaking traditions have been revived by the Pentz family. Peter made the transition from dairy farmer to grapegrower in 1995, with their 1st bottling in 1999. Unique aspects and cool climatic conditions of the Darling Hills yield superlative fruit in every respect, nurtured in the cellar by longtime winemaker Lukas Wentzel. This wine was created for Peter Pentz, and was dubbed “The Old Man’s Blend” by successful farmer son Nick. It is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Shiraz and 7% Cabernet Franc. During winemaking the cultivars were kept apart and aged in third fill 300L French Oak barrels and in stainless steel tanks with staves. At ten months the different components are blended after rigorous tasting sessions with The Old Man.
The result is great – a down to earth, easy drinking soft and smooth red wine. White pepper, spice and raspberry are prominent on the nose with soft and ripe tannins giving an elegant finish. Quaff this wine with cheese and charcuterie platters or even pizza meals.
