In 1997 Andrew Gunn bought an old apple farm in Elgin, way up on a ridge, very close to the ocean. Here, on their 100Ha property, he has 40Ha planted to vines. Iona does in no way profess to be all things all people, and in the endeavour to produce a fine glass of wine from this stunning farm, focuses on four quality wines. The philosophy at Iona is to make wine that expresses the soils and climate as closely as possible, making use of sustainable farming methods and to maximise the use of natural products in farming and winemaking. Everything is done in-house. From the vineyard to the wine distribution, for Andrew and his artist wife Rozy, Iona is the sole source of their focus, passion and great joy. This is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Mourvedre, with a splash of Viognier.
The aroma holds a deep fruitiness – black and red berries. It is juicy on the palate with supple, soft tannins and good acidity lining the flavour. Gorgeous melange of fruits, with a fine liquorice streak ( from the Petit Verdot perhaps? ). Ready for drinking, plateauing at its peak until 2021.
A delicious match for a rich oxtail stew.
