In 1997 Andrew Gunn bought an old apple farm in Elgin, way up on a ridge, very close to the ocean. Here, on their 100Ha property, he has 40Ha planted to vines. Iona does in no way profess to be all things all people, and in the endeavour to produce a fine glass of wine from this stunning farm, focuses on four quality wines. The philosophy at Iona is to make wine that expresses the soils and climate as closely as possible, making use of sustainable farming methods and to maximise the use of natural products in farming and winemaking. Everything is done in-house. From the vineyard to the wine distribution, for Andrew and his artist wife Rozy, Iona is the sole source of their focus, passion and great joy. ( Winemaker: Werner Muller )
Werner saw to it that the Pinot Noir grapes were destalked, and used as much whole berry during the natural yeast fermentation as possible. Ruby-garnet colour of medium depth. Appealing aroma of cold tea, freshly sliced mushrooms and red berry fruits. This charming Pinot has perfect balance, flavours of sour cherry on a base of light earthiness and a long, chalky dryness. Serve with beef carpaccio or medium-rare fillet6 with a mushroom cream sauce. Keep until 2025.
