In 1997 Andrew Gunn bought an old apple farm in Elgin, way up on a ridge, very close to the ocean. Here, on their 100Ha property, he has 40Ha planted to vines. Iona does in no way profess to be all things all people, and in the endeavour to produce a fine glass of wine from this stunning farm, focuses on four quality wines. The philosophy at Iona is to make wine that expresses the soils and climate as closely as possible, making use of sustainable farming methods and to maximise the use of natural products in farming and winemaking. Everything is done in-house. From the vineyard to the wine distribution, for Andrew and his artist wife Rozy, Iona is the sole source of their focus, passion and great joy. Made in as natural a way as possible, and matured in 2nd, 3rd & 4th-fill barrels. Deep, black-ruby colour indicating that it will be very big. On the contrary, it is elegant and not jammy. Whilst the aroma is still rather closed, it is deep and reveals black cherries and a hint of rosemary. On palate it is succulent with a deep core of fruit and good acidity to balance. In a word: delicious ( yet very young ). Mature until 2020 before broaching.
