Region: Stellenbosch (Somerset West)
This Chardonnay comes from a 50-hectare farm on Sir Lowry’s Pass, above Somerset West. The vineyards lie in stony soil, and are windswept by the South-Easter, yet produce very good grapes, mainly due to sustainable farming practices applied by the owners, the Gabb family. Leon Esterhuizen, the cellarmaster, is one of the best Chardonnay makers we have, coaxing complexity out of the grape, whilst retaining its delicacy without overdoing the oak. Here he uses old oak barrels for one-third & stainless steel tanks for two-thirds, one of which has oak staves in it.
The result is a wine with a nose & palate which evokes white & yellow field flowers & freshly cut pear with very delicate oak. It fills the mouth & pans out quite quickly, with super fresh acids on the finish. This wine would pair perfectly with fresh linefish such as Kob or Geelbek.
