In 1995, the Gabb family purchased their beautiful Journey’s End vineyard in the Stellenbosch winelands. From the beginning their focus has been on ethically and sustainably producing delicious premium wines. Supporting the local Sir Lowry’s Pass Village community is also key. In 2020, they launched a foundation which now provides over 30,000 meals a week to those in need.
Nestled amongst the Schapenberg hills, on 350 million-year-old decomposed granite soils, their vines grow in one of the most prestigious terroirs in South Africa. As well as fantastic views, the vineyards benefit from the cooling and cleansing south-easterly wind, known locally as the ‘Cape Doctor’, which comes in from nearby False Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
The grapes for this Merlot were picked from adjacent vineyard blocks five and seven. Block seven is situated next to a Eucalyptus forest, influencing the eventual profile of the wine. These blocks are situated 190m above sea level on a Tukulu soil-type originating from granite decomposition. The close ocean proximity and cool sea breezes allow for longer fruit hangtimes producing great phenolic ripeness in the grapes.
Journey’s End V2 Merlot 2017
R288.00
Region: Stellenbosch
Tasting note:
Ruby, clear and bright. Displaying blackcurrants and raspberries, with hints of subtle blackcurrant leaf. The well-matched oak allows for the fruit to shine while creating complexity with notes of vanilla and nutmeg. This Merlot exhibits very soft tannins with just enough grip to promise good cellaring potential. An elegant, polished wine, already drinking well. Best drunk now and until 2027.
