Since the first vintage was bottled in 1984, Kaapzicht (Cape view – named for the view of Table Mountain) Wine Estate has become highly respected for their quality range of wines and good value for money. This award winning estate lies in the Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch district. The Steytler Family has farmed this land since 1946 and run their 190 hectare estate hands-on. The first Pinotage vineyard was planted on the farm in 1959.
Skraalhans is a long gangly weed found in the vineyards, often growing taller than the vines themselves. Loosely translated as lean stray, the name represents this restrained, fresh and elegant new style of Pinotage.
Trellised vines, aged between seven and fifteen years in weathered granite soil. Grapes were machine harvested. The must was inoculated with biodynamic yeast and only spent three days on the skins with two light pump-overs per day. After gently pressing, the wine was transferred to stainless steel tanks for malolactic conversion. After completion the wine was racked to 500L seasoned oak barrels to age for ten months.
