Kaapzicht (Cape view – named for the view of Table Mountain) Wine Estate was founded in 1946 by a man who swapped the stark Karoo landscape for the promise of a new life on the hospitable Bottelary Hills, Stellenbosch. The soils are ancient granite and the farm is mostly north-west facing, allowing for intense sunlight, but with the cooling breezes from Table and False Bay. Today, Kaapzicht is a 4th-generation Steytler-family run farm. The current custodians, cellar master Danie jnr and wife and marketer Carin, are reshuffling some of the ranges, adding new wines and tweaking the packaging to better reflect the personality of the wines. The portfolio focuses predominantly on the production of Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon, showcasing a different style of each of these varietals across their three ranges.
The dry land bush vines for this Skuinsberg Cinsaut were planted in 1991 on the steepest slope (Skuinsberg) on Kaapzicht – the hill has reportedly claimed quite a few tractors over the past forty years! The soil is low potential, weathered granite – resulting in smaller berries and lower yields. The grapes were hand-picked, fermented in old 500L French oak casks – nothing added, just 100 percent pure old bush vine Cinsaut.
