Rüdger van Wyk, 2018 Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year and José Conde, owner of Stark-Condé Wines in Stellenbosch’ Jonkershoek Valley are proud to debut this Pinot Noir Reserve 2020 of which only 700 bottles were produced from a unique vineyard in the Overberg region. This particular vineyard stands out for its excellent fruit. Planted in rocky shale and surrounded by mountains, this isolated place has the cool climate needed to make elegant and cellar-worthy Pinot. About 20% of the grapes were pressed as whole bunches and the wine was barrel matured for fourteen months, 20% of which were new. Kara-Tara, translated from the Khoisan language spoken by the first people in South Africa, means “deep dark shadows” and refers to the Karatara River that runs through Rüdger’s home town, located near Knysna on the Cape South Coast.
Platter 5 star 2023
Kara-Tara Pinot Noir Reserve 2020
R652.00
Region: Overberg
Tasting note:
Nuanced and elegant, it displays a haunting array of florals, red berry, earth, whiffs of iron, blood orange, and meat spice. The core shimmers with reined in red cherry, constantly shapeshifting and drawing the drinker in to explore its uniqueness. It’s a wine that demands contemplation and attention. There is a weightless intensity and fresh, savoury thread to the lingering finish.
