Region: Helderberg, Stellenbosch
Keermont Vineyards is blessed with some very special and unique vineyard sites. The farm is situated high up in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley, otherwise known as Paradyskloof (Paradise Valley). The Blaauwklippen River, which bisects the farm, is also the boundary between the Helderberg and the Stellenbosch Mountain Range. This means that some of the vineyards are on the warmer north-facing Helderberg slopes and others on the cooler west-facing Stellenbosch range. Due to the steepness of the terrain, the altitude climbs 200m within the 1.7km length of the farm and the vineyards are planted between 250m and 400m above sea level. Thus the vines planted over these different terrains ultimately produce wines with good complexity and a variety of flavours. In addition, just over the Helderberg mountains, False Bay and the Indian Ocean lie just 12.5km from the farm, which also contributes to our local climate.
This wine is a blend of 32% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 12% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec and 2% Syrah.
This is our flagship red blend. With this blend we aim to bring to life the nuances of both the terroir at Keermont Vineyards and the particular vintage. Most of the vineyard parcels grow on deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite and are surrounded by indigenous ‘fynbos’ vegetation. Our vineyards are planted on steep mid-slopes in the valley between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain ranges. Aspects vary from North East through North to West facing between 250 and 400 meters above sea level. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 24 months maturing in seasoned French oak barriques before being bottled by hand without filtration on 1 February 2016. 14229 bottles and 100 magnums were produced. The Keermont Estate Reserve 2014 was bottle aged in our cellar for 36 months before release to ensure integration and improved drinkability on release.
Bright velvet red in the glass, this wine exudes complex aromas of ripe cherry, wild berries, and cloves. On the palate, the wine has a soft entry with an array of flavours: ripe red berries, crushed herbs and spice. There is a dense core which gives the wine good weight on the palate. A full chalky tannin structure comes to the fore affording the wine a long succulent finish with dark cherry notes. Drink 2019-2030.
