Tasting note

Golden hued and full bodied, with melon and spicy baked apple aromas. Layered, with mineral notes enhanced by honeycomb and light caramel flavours from lees contact. This wine is a great example of the harmonious balance which can be achieved between fruit and delicate oak/vanilla flavours, as they combine to form complex, soft flavours with sufficient body to enhance  full flavoured meals.

Try it with spicy foods, full-flavoured fish or chicken dishes and even shellfish.

Ken Forrester Wines is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg mountain in Stellenbosch. Scholtenhof, one of the oldest farms in the Cape was originally granted to German, Frederick Boot (later Botha) who planted his first vines in 1694. In 1833 another German family, the named Scholtz (hence Scholtenhof) took over and farmed happily for nearly 100 years. Subsequently a succession of owners took up residence and the property fell on hard times in the early 1990s.

In 1993, Ken Forrester and his wife Teresa bought the vacant and derelict farm and homestead and undertook a huge renovation of the vineyards and house. In 1994 the first wines were produced under the Ken Forrester label and were soon at the forefront of the Chenin Blanc revival.

The grapes for this 100% Chenin were hand harvested from a 38 year old vineyard planted in Clovelly soils (deep yellow sand), South South West facing, and mostly from unirrigated bush vines. The juice was barrel and tank fermented and left on the lees ( nine months French oak, 20% new) matured on secondary lees for a rounded complexity.
