Koelenhof Wine Cellar Stellenbosch 1679 Single Vineyard Old Vines Pinotage 2022

A Stellenbosch institution with well over eighty vintages, Koelenhof Winery vinifies select pockets for its own labels, smaller batches for clients, and some for the bulk trade. The wines in the pinnacle line-up, Stellenbosch 1679, are intended to compete with not just South Africa’s finest, but the best in the world.
The grapes chosen for this Pinotage are from a single vineyard, part of the Old Vine Project, from forty-six-year-old vines. Growing in predominantly Tukulu and Dresden soils on a base of shale, the vineyard has a moderate ripening season with cool nights and warm, dry days. Grapes are vinified for seven days on skins in open fermenters at 25°C and barrel aged for sixteen months in 300L French oak barrels.
