The La Brune dream (French for brunette) was born when winemaker Nico Grobler fell in love with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir through a close friend and Vigneron Bruno Lorenzon of Domaine Lorenzon in Mercurey (Côte Chalonnaise Burgundy). Nico is a viticulturist first with more than fifteen years experience in growing vineyards around South Africa. La Brune has access to some of the highest elevation Chardonnay vineyards in South Africa and has the honour of producing its Pinot Noir from one of the highest density vineyards at 10 000 vines per hectare. (South African average is 3 300 vines per hectare) using five selected clones.

Tasting note:
‘Grapes from Lothian, 60% CY548 and 40% CY95. Matured for nine months in 228-litre barrels, 25% new. Classic aromatics of lemon, a touch of flinty reduction, oatmeal and little oak spice. The palate possesses both depth and breadth – powerful and textured without tipping into opulence, the finish bone dry. A wine of real gravitas, still somewhat unresolved, the oak requiring a little more time to fully integrate. Alc: 13.3%’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100
‘Brioche nose. You feel you are walking into a French bakery ordering patisseries. Hint of fruit but more perfume and citrus skin. Core of the wine is minerality. Layers of texture guides you to a tight and linear finish. Showcasing the profile of Table Mountain sandstone.’ – Winemaker
