The La Brune dream (French for brunette) was born when winemaker Nico Grobler fell in love with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir through a close friend and Vigneron Bruno Lorenzon of Domaine Lorenzon in Mercurey (Côte Chalonnaise Burgundy). Nico is a viticulturist first with more than fifteen years experience in growing vineyards around South Africa. La Brune has access to some of the highest elevation Chardonnay vineyards in South Africa and has the honour of producing its Pinot Noir from one of the highest density vineyards at 10 000 vines per hectare. (South African average is 3 300 vines per hectare) using five selected clones.
La Brune Pinot Noir 2024
R706.00
Region: Elgin
Tasting note:
‘Grapes from own high-density plantings, 60% clone 115 and 40% 113. 45% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for nine months in 228-litre barrels, 25% new. The nose is wonderfully intricate with notes of red berries, rose, fresh herb and traces of earth and spice but nothing too dark or brooding. The palate is crystalline – excellent fruit purity, racy acidity and extremely fine, powdery tannins. A gorgeous wine – delicate, yes, but by no means ephemeral. It lingers with grace. Alc: 13.8%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100
‘Vintage 2024 blessed us with a beautiful intense cherry profile. A profile found in only the great vintages. Perfume and orange peel brings freshness, elegance and finesse. Intense structure brings longevity and mouthfeel balanced by the beautiful acidity that we found in 2024. It’s an addictive combination. The best are saved for last as we finish on a beautiful chalky profile. That’s where this vintage whispers the message of the land as only a high density Pinot Noir vineyard in Ferricrete soil can do.’ – Winemaker
