“From a vineyard planted in 1900, this aromatic wine has an alluring and complex nose suggesting roses, cranberries, cherries, spice and a hint of thyme. The pallet is fresh and silky textured, with notes of orange peel, rhubarb, maraschino cherries, pink peppercorns and cloves. Fine tannins give great structure to the wine.” – Winemaker

“Grapes from a vineyard planted in 1900. Matured for 21 months in 500-litre barrels. Rose, cranberry, raspberry, prune and spice on the nose while the palate has both breadth and depth – weighty and round with layers of flavour, the finish savoury. A sumptuous wine, the only weakness perhaps a slight heat to the finish – alcohol is 14.5%.” – CE 95pts

In this boutique venture, as stellar as their separately listed Mullineux Wines, husband and wife Chris and Andrea have partnered with businessmen Analjit Singh to establish the Leeu Passant Winery. Based in Franschhoek, their purpose is to harness the most exciting vineyards of the Cape to produce authentic wines unique to the culture, terroir, history and tastes of the Cape. So, while not all wines are from heritage pockets, with careful selection and distinctiveness in mind, spectacular and age worthy wines are guaranteed. The name “Leeu Passant”, refers to a ‘passing Lion’ and is the symbol on the top of the capsule.
This historic parcel of dry farmed bush vine Cinsault grows on an ancient riverbed in Wellington, comprised of deep sandy alluvial soils, which provides the incredible perfume and structure in this wine. It is the oldest registered red wine vineyard in South Africa, planted in 1900 on the first selection of rootstocks available in the country.
