“62% Chenin Blanc, 30% Verdelho and 8% Grenache Blanc (five days skin contact). Grapes sourced from across the Western Cape. No Colombar and Palamino as was the case in 2021 and 2022. Stone fruit, lemon, soft citrus, potpourri, ginger and a little yeasty complexity on the nose. The palate is intense but not weighty – good clarity of fruit and snappy acidity before a finish that’s dry, more salty than grippy. Alc: 13%.” – CE 95pts

Franco Lourens produces excellent wines under his own label, Lourens Family Wines. Previously assistant winemaker to Chris Alheit at Alheit Vineyards, he still has Chris, one of South Africa’s most gifted winemakers, as his daily mentor and inspiration.
Franco sources grapes across the Western Cape, with the aim of producing honest wines that have a sense of place and tell a story about that place and the farmer tending the vines. Grapes in this blend are – Chenin Blanc from the Swartland (41 year old vineyard) and Piekenierskloof (62 years old), with Verdelho from Stellenbosch and Granache Blanc from Piekenierskloof. The wine was fermented and matured for ten months in mature neutral 300L and 500L barrels.
Lourens Family Wines wines are already highly acclaimed and Franco is definitely one of the most talented young winemakers in South Africa today.
