“From a Piekenierskloof vineyard planted on sandstone at 750m above sea level in 1977. The nose shows stone fruit, orange and some waxy character. The palate is powerful – dense fruit, big acidity and finish that has just a touch of quinine-like bitterness. Thick textured in the best sense and super-flavourful. Alc: 14%.” – CE 94pts

Franco Lourens produces excellent wines under his own label, Lourens Family Wines. Previously assistant winemaker to Chris Alheit at Alheit Vineyards, he still has Chris, one of South Africa’s most gifted winemakers, as his daily mentor and inspiration.
Franco sources grapes across the Western Cape, with the aim of producing honest wines that have a sense of place and tell a story about that place and the farmer tending the vines. This wine is made from a single vineyard in the Piekenierskloof, passionately farmed by the Sandell family and team.
Lourens Family Wines wines are already highly acclaimed and Franco is definitely one of the most talented young winemakers in South Africa today.
