This family owned, small-batch winemaking venture was started by Alexandra McFarlane, with a dream to have something family-owned and operated, and a deep desire to honour some of South Africa’s heritage varieties. They search high and low for vineyards that excite them; whether they are situated on an exposed rocky, shale site, or if they are really old and have had their roots in the ground for many years. Each block has a story to tell, and each year they get to work with the fruit, they get to know the block a little bit better. In Alexandra’s words: ‘we love making wines that are delicious to drink and unpretentious. Every vineyard, vintage and bottle has a story that we look forward to sharing with you on our journey into honestly made, proudly South African wine.’
McFarlane Wines Saturday’s Child Pinotage 2022
R442.00
Region: Walker Bay
Tasting note:
‘From Stanford Pinotage. 15% whole-bunch fermented before maturation lasting eight months in older 300-litre barrels. Some smoky reduction before black cherry and crushed herbs on the nose. The palate is lean and fresh with fine tannins. It has a pleasing coolness about it (alcohol is 12.5%) but some may find it too angular and geeky.’ – CE 90/100
‘Dark bramble fruit on the nose with brooding spice. The tannins are firm carried by dark, inky fruit and fresh acidity. This wine has incredible intensity and will shows its true potential in 2027 with some bottle age. This would be best enjoyed with a rare Bavette steak, twice cooked fries and a green pepper corn sauce.’ – Winemaker
