Growing fine wines on the Meerlust Estate has been part of the Myburgh family tradition for eight generations, beginning in 1756. Long recognized for producing world-class wines, Meerlust is situated fifteen kilometres south of Stellenbosch in the heart of South Africa’s winelands. The first owner of the property, Henning Huising, settled here in 1693 and named his new-found home “Meerlust”, meaning “pleasure of the sea”, as the manor house sits on a granite outcrop only 5 km from False Bay. Visitors to the Estate – a National Monument – have for centuries anticipated seeing the cool, white façade of the Manor House as they passed through the gates and along the palm and oak tree-lined drive. Today, that sense of having arrived at a most treasured home and estate is enhanced by the knowledge – on seeing the sweep of vineyards that flank the drive – that here grow the grapes of the prized Meerlust wines.
The Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on low yielding, predominantly biotite partially decomposed granite gravel topsoil rich in quartz and feldspar to a depth of approximately 600mm with a loamy clay subsoil. The Merlot vineyards are planted on more clay rich, yet well drained soils to ensure moisture retention and availability to the vines roots right through the summer. There are considerable deposits of iron-rich Laterite in the Merlot vineyards which accentuates the fruit definition and mineral profile of the wine. The Cabernet Franc Vineyard is situated on very well drained, stony Vilafontes soil with approximately 20% clay which is ideal for this variety. The Petit Verdot is on Oakleaf 3 soils on a northerly aspect to ensure full phenolic ripeness.
