Barbera is one of the pivotal red grapes found in Piedmont, NW Italy. Traditionally light-medium bodied and fruity, it is dry with fair acidity, needing food to enjoy it at its best. An Italian Count in the 17th century first cited Barbera wine as a favourite with army officers, thus originating the catch-phrase: “the people’s wine”. These vines are fifteen years old and produce eight tons/ha. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks, and later matured for twelve months in 1st, 2nd and 3rd fill in French Oak barrels.
MERWIDA Barbera 2019
Light-medium bodied, with aroma and flavour of sour cherry and plum, with a faint hint of anise. It started off grippy at first, softening up on the palate, especially when accompanied by a delicious pizza topped with real Mozzarella, mushrooms and salami. Drink now – 2025.
