‘An alluring and instantly impressive classically styled wine aged in neutral 228 litre French oak barrels for 16 months, reveals complex aromatics of ripe black plum, boysenberry, potpourri, sweet black peppercorns with a hint of sweet grilled herbs and black berry reduction. The intensity and precision of this 2021 are notable and follow to an elegant, medium-bodied palate that coats the mouth with sumptuous, saline cassis fruit layers, sweet smoky black currant and subtle hints of kelp and oyster shell minerality. This is another delightfully vibrant expression that will seduce many Syrah obsessives, with its 20% whole bunch portion adding an extra little complexing sapidity on the long finish. Undoubtedly a wine that is going to cause a stir… but that is exactly what Sam Lambson has become famous for! ‘Home might be Elgin but the upfront kick of white pepper and cardamom takes us straight to an Indian Spice Bazaar. Its complex combinations ebbing and flowing, with pretty florals morphing into cherry, leather and bacon fat. On entry, it is all about coated red fruit, followed by a savoury mid-palate that finishes strong with distinct white pepper. Studying Oenology at Stellenbosch University while working in the town’s boutique wine store  were the starting points for Sam Lambson’s wine education. But the passion kicked in while working harvests under the leading Cape winemakers Carl van der Merwe, Lukas van Loggerenberg and Chris Alheit.
It was then he discovered that making good wine is all about working with good grapes and good people and the importance of treating them both gently in the vineyard and the cellar. It was also the beginning of Sam’s love affair with Syrah. He launched Minimalist Wines, at age twenty-one, to explore its diversity in South African terroir and to showcase its elegant power in the cooler climate vineyards of the Cape.
No Place Like Home is the second single-origin Syrah to join the Minimalist Wine family. It is a clear and complex expression of the cool-climate Elgin Valley, paying tribute to the rugged terroir of Cape Agulhas. The grapes all come from Niemandsrivier, a beautiful three hectare vineyard in Elgin on a geographically complex mix of Sandstone and Shale soils. Each of the four picks was harvested separately, and completed their spontaneous fermentations over an average of two weeks, with 20% whole bunch and one to two punch downs daily. Once pressed gently to tank, they were racked to neutral 228L French Oak, aged on gross lees through Winter, and racked again in Spring, before being returned to barrel where they matured for a total of sixteen months.
