Winegrowing and conservation of pristine natural beauty are intertwined at Mooiplaas Wine Estate & Private Nature Reserve situated on the steep slopes of mineral-rich soils on Stellenbosch’s Bottelary Hills. The history of the farm dates back to 1806, with the manor house on the estate – a national monument – an impressive example of Cape Dutch architecture. Bought by Nicolaas Roos in 1963, the estate is now managed by brothers Tielman and Louis Roos who preside over an extensive range ‘rooted in tradition and artisan techniques to reflect terroir’, and grown in an eco-friendly manner. Tielman is in charge of viticulture, cellarmaster Louis manages exports to twenty-three countries, with winemaker Bertus Basson crafting the wines. On the farm is a scenic hiking trail which forms part of a seventy-five hectare nature reserve, accorded WWF-SA Conservation Champion status since 2020.
Mooiplaas Watershed Pinot Noir 2019
R358.00
Region: Stellenbosch
Tasting note:
The Watershed Pinot Noir is made in the classical cold climate style. The wine is driven by intense fruit of red berries with perfectly integrated acidity and a good structure. The goal was to create a wine which shows elegance and complexity rather than a heavy, oak- dominated style. The wine should evolve well over time, with ample structure and concentration to age for 8 to 10 years.
