Mullineux is a small, highly focused Family winery producing a select range of hand-crafted wines from the granite and shale based terroirs of the Swartland Region of South Africa. Mullineux Family Wines was established in 2007 by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. Within a very short time period the winery established itself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine brands, both locally and on the international front. By 2019 they had received twenty five 5 star ratings from Platter’s South African Wine Guide, as well as being awarded Platter’s Winery of the Year in 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020. In addition, Andrea Mullineux was named Wine Enthusiast’s 2016 International Winemaker of the Year and in 2017 Chris & Andrea were Tim Atkin’s South African Winemakers of the Year.
Grapes for the Olerasay Straw Wine are sourced from the parcels of old vine Chenin Blanc that give the best acidity at harvest. The vines are planted in the stony Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg and the decomposed Granite based soils of the Paardeberg. Grapes are harvested at normal ripeness levels and left to dry in the shade of some trees for a few weeks. This allows the moisture to evaporate naturally from the berries, concentrating sugars, acids and flavor. When the grapes have shriveled halfway to becoming raisins they are crushed and pressed whole bunch into old 225L barrels. The juice ferments naturally for around 9 months and finishes on its own, with no fortification or filtration. Each vintage they hold back a barrel or two of Straw Wine and blend them into the Olerasay, refreshing it each year with the new vintages. This is the second release of Olerasay and is from barrels which were fractionally blended from the 2008 through 2019 vintages, producing many layers of complexity, nuttiness and depth.
