Tasting Note

‘Grapes from three blocks, two north-facing and one south-facing. Matured for 11 months in 228- and 500-litre barrels, 25% new. Aromatics are still very primary with notes of citrus, oatmeal, a hint of vanilla and some flinty reduction. The palate is intense but not overly weighty – extra-concentrated fruit and scintillating acidity before a savoury finish. Pure, energetic and beautifully poised, this is years off drinking at its best. Alc: 13%.’ – CE 96/100

‘Blending three different components from both sides of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, this is a beautifully judged Chardonnay from a South African master of the variety. Voluptuous and textured, yet focused and energetic at the same time, it has struck match top notes, 22% new oak, citrus and vanilla spice flavours and a pithy, salty finish. 2024-30’ – Tim Atkin MW 95/100

Newton Johnson Vineyards is owned and managed by the Newton Johnson family. Their vineyards are located in the upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation which lies at an altitude of 150 to 300 metres above sea level in the sole emergence of igneous granite in the Southern Cape which is described as porphyritic, having cooled in stages to distinct sizes of crystal, and decomposed further into the soil structure. Lower down, clays formed help protect the vines from temperature change and dehydration. It is believed that the granite provides the linear and perfumed characters of Newton Johnson wines.

The Family Vineyards Chardonnay uses fruit from three vineyard sites on the farm, widely varied in their exposure to the sun. The south facing Chardonnay vineyards produce edgy and agile wines with ‘nervy acidity’, while the north facing slopes produce more lustrous wines, delivering weight without being heavy and layering the structure. A natural approach in the winemaking ensured a complex array of characters in this wine.
