This farm is situated on the Breedekloof’s Brandwacht mountain slopes, and is owned by Hollander Paul Leeuwerik, who is making great strides in progressing towards producing excellent Rhone-style wines. Last year they won top honours for the best Rhone-style red wine at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. New winemaker Elizma Visser has made a beautiful Rhone-style white wine, a blend of Roussane, Grenache Blanc & Chardonnay. Natural fermentation without any commercial yeasts, with long ageing on the lees in barrel to attain complexity and creaminess. The Chardonnay dominates, but as you air the wine, the Roussane’s complexity adds weight and a vinosity, whilst the Grenache brings freshness and lift.
A refreshingly modern take on a classic white blend – Rhône-inspired but proudly Breedekloof terroir! The white Rhône varieties, Roussane and Grenache Blanc, dominate the aromatics of the nose and palate, while Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay add layers of fruit and complexity. The individual grapes are whole bunch pressed to ensure elegant extraction. Natural fermentation took place in seasoned French oak barrels adding layers of complexity. The blended wine was aged for ten months on the lees, contributing to the freshness and richness of the wine.A very enticing wine. Beautiful balance between savoury, floral and opulent fruit aromas. Fairly full bodied and richly textured supported by a keen line of acidity.
A perfect match for Paella or similar, as each of the cultivars’ flavours will match the myriad elements of the dish.
